Project History

Clapham Junction

In 2007 and 2008, Constructive Geotechnical was appointed by Network Rails’ Engineers to undertake Ground Investigation works at several railway stations including Clapham Junction as part of the 'Step Free Access' Programme, which was completed in two phases.

Network Rail are currently responsible for the improvement of Britain's railway lines.

Clapham Junction which opened in 1863 is located near St. John's Hill to the southwest of Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth, and currently funnels through traffic and many routes from London's busiest termini, Waterloo and Victoria stations.

Ground investigation works were carried out by Constructive Geotechnical in order to ascertain information in preparation for the much needed access improvements that are to be completed during 2009. These access improvements include the installation of new lifts to the platforms and radical refurbishments of the public toilet facilities and kiosks on the platforms.

Constructive Geotechnical provided site investigation works which were completed over two phases and included four boreholes drilled to a maximum depth of 30mbgl using cable percussive techniques, four hand excavated trial pits to a maximum depth of 3.2mbgl against the steel columns of the footbridge to expose existing foundations and two window sample positioned to a maximum depth of 3.5mbgl to using light weight window sampling techniques to provide further data on the underlying soil conditions. These were later followed by in-house laboratory testing and consultation with regards soil information and foundation design.
